Why We're Here
In the not-so-distant past, the only way to locate a therapist was through referrals or possibly the phone book. You'd start off the search with limited information, then after several calls to several therapists, you'd only begin to narrow down your search to someone who fit with your needs. Or you'd visit your doctor to get a referral, which could be intimidating. And for therapists looking for new clients, marketing in general was looked upon with scorn. Then came the Internet, offering ways to bring people together like never before. Drawing from our CEO's experience in social work, we soon envisioned a way to use this emerging technology to help match up those providing mental health and disability services with those that needed them. So in 1996, we launched the Internet's first therapist search engine: an easy-to-use, informative Web site letting Americans search on their own for a qualified therapist by treatment area, treatment modality, location, insurance plan, language spoken, therapist gender, and patient type.
Today, Find Counseling.com attracts more than one million visitors a year and is one of the most trusted therapist search engines on the Internet. Find Counseling.com's sister site, CommunityResources.net, has been providing free webpages to not-for-profit organizations for 10 years.
