Personal Statement

Recently a client asked, "What's your speciality?" I started to describe groups of people and disorders but instead I simply said, "I help people get their lives back on track." I find that individuals come to therapy because they are stressed out and overwhelmed, dealing with deep losses, in conflict within relationships, anxious and/or depressed, or simply to move their lives in a more positive direction. I listen, find out what the clients need and them work with them to develop a plan to reach their goals. I view therapy as collaborative and recognize that much of therapy happens between sessions.

I focus on developing awareness and understanding of personal process. Awareness because until I know what I am doing that complicates my life, I cannot make changes that work. And understanding my process (what I do and why I do it) because recognizing the forces (beliefs, feelings) that drive me, I am free to make choices about who I become and how I live my life.
Awareness and understanding of process is a gift which can lead to exploring options, breaking dysfunctional patterns, and making desired changes.

I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and groups. Areas of expertise include: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, relationship issues, PTSD, trauma (mental, physical and sexual abuse), and dissociative identity issues.

My theorical approach is eclectic including psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive behavioral therapy. I am interactive and tend to focus on the present. However, when the past interferes with the present then exploring past experiences becomes a part of unraveling what is occurring presently. I do not ask clients to go beyond their comfort level but encourage taking risks to find desired freedom and happiness.
