Personal Statement

Is your relationship struggling? Do you think it is too good to leave but too bad to stay? When this happens, it's easy for well meaning friends to give opinions that may not be right for you. Sometimes an unbiased party can help. If you've tried your best but it's not getting better, let me help. I may provide education, assign homework or suggest behavioral tasks to help you reach your goals.

My approach is eclectic. I draw from many different therapeutic models depending on the condition. For example, when treating marital issues I utilize the work of John Gottman, a marital researcher. When treating depression I utilize the work of David Burns on cognitive therapy. If dealing with anxiety, I may utilize desensitization techniques of EMDR in addition to relaxation techniques. If a couple is experiencing difficulties caused by infidelity I will utilize material from Janis Abrahms Spring designed to help a couple heal after an affair.

Treatment is usually solution-focused rather than insight-focused – that is, concrete interventions are sought to change unhealthy patterns. Insight frequently comes with change in therapy; rather than preceding it.

The first and second session are primarily designed for assessment purposes. I will gather information about your unique situation and ascertain what you hope to achieve through counseling. Together we will devise a plan that is both attainable and understandable for your unique needs. I may administer assessment questionnaires, provide education, assign homework or suggest behavioral tasks to help you reach your goals. Treatment concludes as soon as your goals are met.

You may schedule the session frequency in a manner that fits your needs and finances. However, many clients will attend weekly appointments until they see an improvement in their situation, and then may decrease the frequency.

Length of treatment depends upon various factors, including seriousness of the problem. Generally, couples and family counseling tends to be briefer or shorter in length than individual psychotherapy.
