Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor
A term often used interchangeably with the term Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. For those states that license Marriage and Family Therapists separate from Professional Counselors, the term "Therapist" is used far more often than "Counselor" in the title. The state licensure requirements often use the terms "therapist" and "counselor" interchangeably.Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors are typically required to hold a Master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field. Additionally, they must complete 1000 to 3000 hours of supervised work experience and pass a licensure exam. Some states require an additional 20-40 hours of continuing education to qualify for license renewal.
