Criminal Exhibitionists Likely to Re-Offend
|
A long-term study of exhibitionists published in the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law shows that they are likely to offend again or commit additional sexual offenses.
Researchers followed 208 male exhibtionists from 1983 to 1996. Of these, nearly one in four went on to be charged with a contact sexual offense such as sexual assault or sexual touching, while 31 percent were charged with a violent crime and 39 percent a criminal offense. The study's authors say the research is vital in illustrating not only that exhibitionists have a high rate of recidivism, but also that they tend to progress to more serious,"hands-on" crimes.
