Vitamins, Fish Oil May Help Treat Depression

Dietitians at Sydney University in Australia have identified several nutritional supplements which may aid in treating depression. Their study, published in Nutrition & Dietetics, found St. John's Wart, vitamins B-6, B-12, folate, the essential amino acid tryptophan and the chemical S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe) all to show potential. However, omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in some nuts and oily fish were shown to be the most promising, with three meals of oily fish or the equivalent in supplements per week showing optimal benefits to mental health.
