Childhood Physical Abuse Shown to Cause Adult Depression

Children who are physically abused have a 59 percent higher chance of developing major depression later in life compared to other children, shows a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
The study followed 680 abused children and 520 non-abused children from similar socioeconomic backgrounds to age 29. Compared with non-abused children, neglected and abused children had up to a 75 percent higher chance of developing depression, with many symptoms appearing as early as childhood.
