Canada's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) released findings today showing that previously married mothers have higher rates of mental illness and substance abuse than both currently married mothers and those who were never married.
The study increases knowledge about mental illness by showing how the route to single parenthood--and not just the status of being a single parent--may affect mental health. Said Dr. Lori Ross, a CAMH researcher, "The data show that it is important for both researchers and clinicians to recognize that all single parents are not alike. This concept is critical to understanding the context of single parenthood, its potential mental health implications.”
