Quality Child Care Buffers Effects Of Poverty
|
Poverty in early childhood has been repeatedly linked to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety later in life. However, University of North Carolina researchers now show that high quality childcare during these years may help protect them from these effects.
Their study used data from the Abecedarian Project which followed 111 high-risk children into adulthood. Some children were randomly placed in an early childhood education program from infancy to age 5, while others served as a control group. Researchers followed up with 104 of the children at age 21. Those who had participated in the early childhood education program were found to have fewer symptoms of depression. The program was also found to mitigate the effects of home environment. Meanwhile, children from the control group were experienced greater depression in concordance with negative home environments.
