Shopping Patterns Can Predict Normal, Psychotic Personalities

Taking a look at holiday shopping patterns may help identify personality disorders, says Paul Albanese, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Kent State University.

Albanese has classified personality types into four categories: normal, neurotic, primitive and psychotic. Accordingly, normal personalities follow healthy spending patterns, living below their means and saving to buy what they cannot afford now. Neurotic personalities meanwhile are apt to shop extensively but rarely buy, while primitive personalities are prone to impulse buys. Compulsive shoppers, who may rack up serious financial debt via compulsive purchases commonly fall into the psychotic category, according to Albanese.
