Debt Stress Increases Physical Health Problems

It's no secret that bills can stress us out. But being in debt can also lead to a substantially increased risk of digestive tract issues, depression, migraines and even heart attack, shows a new poll of more than 1000 Americans.

Among participants who reported high levels of debt stress, 27 percent suffered from ulcers or digestive tract problems, compared to just 8 percent of people with low levels of debt stress. Forty-four percent of people with high debt stress suffered migraines or other headaches, compared to just 15 percent of people with low debt stress and six percent reported heart attacks compared to just three percent.

On the mental health side, 29 percent suffered severe anxiety and 23 percent severe depression, compared to four percent for each disorder.

Individuals with high levels of debt stress were also likely to suffer from lower back pain or tension, high blood pressure, insomnia and concentration problems.
