Depression Plus Diabetes A Recipe For Dementia

Diabetes has been linked to the development of dementia--in fact some researchers theorize that one type of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, is a third form of diabetes. Depression has also been linked to dementia. Now a new study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine has shown that adults with diabetes who also have a history of major depression face more than double the risk of dementia as other diabetics. During a five-year tracking period, eight percent of diabetes patients with major depression were diagnosed with dementia compared with five percent of those who were only diabetic.
