U.S. ADHD Rates Approach 10 Percent

Rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have risen to 9.5 percent, show findings from a 2007-2008 telephone survey of U.S. households. The figure marks an increase from 7.8 percent from a 2003 survey.

Parents were questioned only about whether a health professional had ever told them their child had ADHD, however. The survey did not provide information on how thorough an assessment was performed and only two-thirds of children reported to have ADHD were also taking medication for the disorder.

The study also found that ADHD rates had highly increased among the oldest group in the survey, adolescents age 15 to 17, as well as in Hispanic and multi-racial children.
