Success in Adulthood Linked to Childhood Impulsivity

What if an individual's success and health could be traced back to a childhood single factor? According to new research, it can.

A 32-year study of 1000 children has identified impulse control at age three as a critical factor in measures ranging from financial wealth to risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease by age 32. Compared to individuals who showed the most self-control at age 3, those with the least experienced substantially higher rates of health problems, substance abuse, crime convictions, and single parenthood. This was true even when researchers adjusted for factors such as IQ and socioeconomic status. Comparing 500 identical twins, researchers found similar results.

Children's self-control was assessed by several dimensions including hyperactivity, lack of control, impulsive aggression, lack of persistence, inattention and impulsivity. However, parents of unruly little ones need not fear too much -- researchers also found that children whose self-control increased over time fared well, giving hope that a little parenting in the right direction can create the type of growth that leads to success.
