No Relationship Between Abortion and Mental Health Risks
|
A new study from Denmark has found that women who terminate a pregnancy face no increased mental health risk, although women who give birth do. The study looked at 365,550 teenagers who had an abortion or their first child between 1995 and 2007. Of these, 84,620 terminated the pregnancy in the first trimester. Results showed that subjects who terminated pregnancies sought mental health treatment at the same rate they had prior to pregnancy, about 15 women per 1,000. In first-time mothers, the rate of mental health treatment increased dramatically, however. Before pregnancy, this group sought mental health help at a rate of 4 per 1,000 compared to 7 per 1,000 after birth. Common problems included depression, severe stress and anxiety. As RH Reality Check notes, these findings echo previous studies which show that elective abortion does not seriously threaten the mental health of most women.
