Diet 'Main Cause of ADHD'
|
A new study published in The Lancet has conclusively stated that diet plays a role in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The study's lead author, Dr. Lidy Pelsser of the Dutch ADHD Research Centre, proposes that the majority of children diagnosed with ADHD are actually experiencing a sensitivity to certain foods. Through a double-blind study, she found that merely restricting the foods in children's diets over a period of several weeks produced positive changes in behavior in 64 percent of ADHD-diagnosed children. Based on these results, Pelsser stated, "Food is the main cause of ADHD. After the diet, they were just normal children with normal behavior." The study concludes more soberly, stating that a restricted elimination diet closely supervised by a physician can be useful in determining whether ADHD is caused by dietary sensitivities.
