Dr. McCaughan attended Boston University and Stanford University. He was a NIMH Clinical Research Fellow in Adolescence at the University of Chicago, Michael Reese Hospital, and Illinois State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. McCaughan received his doctorate from the University of Chicago. In addition to his practice of psychotherapy, he serves as a consultant and teacher.

Personal Statement
I believe that psychotherapy must be informed by a developmental model that gives appropriate weight to the influences and complexities of temperment, history, current experience, and existential concerns. I employ an interpersonal approach that organizes the history of psychological and social development as expressed in contemporary interpersonal relations at times manifest in troubling subjective experience and behavior. The analysis of interpersonal relationships provides for the kind of understanding and experience that leads to an awareness of new possibilities in living and a renewed capacity to act for oneself.
